The US Steam price above is the figure returned by Steam’s app details on 14 October 2026, with no discount on that public response. Creative Assembly’s FAQ lists the same $39.99 alongside £34.99 and €39.99, and SEGA’s Japanese product sheet lists 5,990 yen including tax. Existing Steam owners of the 2011 game have a separate 75% loyalty window, described on the what’s included page. Store prices move, and regional prices can differ.

What kind of game it is

SHOGUN 2 is a strategy game that switches between a turn-based campaign on a map of Japan and real-time battles. Steam’s short description calls that mix empire building and real-time fighting: alliances, sabotage, and rival clans. The campaign fantasy, in both the store text and SEGA’s announcement, is to unite Japan and become shogun.

SEGA describes three standalone campaigns covering more than 700 years, from 1175 to 1876. The main SHOGUN 2 campaign is the Sengoku period. Rise of the Samurai returns to the Genpei War. Fall of the Samurai covers the clash of samurai tradition and industrial weapons in the Boshin War. Those three starts are compared on the three campaigns page.

What the Complete Edition changes

Steam, SEGA, and Creative Assembly describe the same set of updates: lighting, shadows, and textures; interface scaling for 1440p and 4K; modernised controls; full Japanese and Chinese voice and text; more than 50 newly playable minor factions; Mod.io mod support; and a 64-bit upgrade. SEGA’s announcement also names ultrawide monitor support and colourblind options. Steam’s feature tags add practical store flags such as HDR, Steam Cloud, Family Sharing, a level editor, and 105 achievements.

It is a new Windows app, not a patch that overwrites the 2011 install. The original game stays playable. Mods written for that original game do not load in the Complete Edition. The older editions page sets the 2011 release, the 2013 Gold compilations, and the later Mac and Linux ports next to this 2026 package.

Platforms, age, and reviews

Steam marks Windows as supported and macOS and Linux as not supported. The Mac and Linux requirement blocks in the app details are empty. SEGA’s product sheet lists PC via Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Windows, and the FAQ adds GOG. A controller category is not among the localized Steam tags, and the app details do not state Steam Deck status.

Steam’s age field for the app is 17. Ratings carried in the store data include ESRB Mature 17, PEGI 18, and CERO Z. ESRB descriptors in that feed are violence, blood and gore, mild sexual themes, language, and drug reference.

On 14 October 2026, the day after launch, Steam’s review summary for this app was Overwhelmingly Negative: 237 positive reviews and 972 negative reviews, 1,209 in total. That count changes. This guide does not score the game and does not summarise individual review texts.

Steam’s website field for the app was empty. Marketing and FAQ pages do exist on SEGA and Creative Assembly domains. Links for every page used here are on Sources.

Guides

How this guide is written

Pages are compiled from the Steam store record, SEGA’s announcement, Creative Assembly’s FAQ, and reference articles on the original game. They are not a diary of play. The byline Total War SHOGUN 2 Editorial Team is the public name for that work. Where Steam leaves a field blank, the page says so instead of filling the gap.
